SRAM Tour of the Gila: Changes for 2012

The weather outside right now may be cold and snowy, but it is already time to start thinking about registering for the classic southwestern spring challenge, the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila. Exciting news for us, the UCI has just added the SRAM Tour of the Gila‚s Men Pro,1 race to the UCI America Tour Calendar as a 2.2 event. The Women Pro,1,2 race is once again on the USA Cycling National Racing Calendar. It is shaping up to be another exciting race through some of the most beautiful country in the southwest.

If this epic stage race is in your future, then go ahead and mark your calendar right now, as the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila stage race is set for May 2 ˆ May 6, 2012, in Silver City, New Mexico. Registration will open online January 1, 2012 at www.BikeReg.com.

There have been a few changes for the 2012 race, as follows:

With the Men Pro,1 race becoming a team only event, Cat 1 riders can now enter the new Men 1,2 race.

Instead of a Men 4,5 race, which was limited to 75 riders in 2011, a Men 4 four day race is being offered, which will allow for a field of 125 Cat 4 riders. If you are a Cat 5 racer considering racing Gila in 2012, we recommend considering an upgrade to a Cat 4 before May.

Two Men 40+ races will be offered this year: Master Men A and Master Men B. The Master Men A race is for Men 40+/50+/60+ with Cat 1,2 or 3 licenses, and is a five day race. An overall general classification winner will be awarded, with additional general classification winners for 50+ and 60+.

The Master Men B race is for Men 40+/50+/60+ with Cat 3, 4 or 5 licenses, and is a four day race. An overall general classification winner will be awarded, with additional general classification winners for 50+ and 60+.
